BC Business Top 100 Keynote PresentationMonday, July 5th, 2010

On Wednesday, June 30th, from 1-2:30pm at Hotel Vancouver’s BC Ballroom, close to 600 of BC’s business elite sat in chairs to be dazzled, entertained and inspired by Giovanni Livera, one of the top magicians in all of North America.

Giovanni is a magician by trade, Italian by ethnicity, and has a personality bigger than that of God himself.  He was clever with his tricks, funny in his demonstrations, and got you to have a good, gut-wrenching belly laugh within 15 minutes of watching him.  I was a skeptic at first, and thought he’d lost his mind, but I realized post-event that there was purpose and logic to his madness.

He gave everyone in the audience a penny and a small, square-shaped piece of paper with a hole in the middle. The challenge? Get the penny through the slightly smaller-sized hole without ripping the piece of paper – oh, and here’s the kicker – do this within 2 minutes. I was so proud of myself, because I figured it out after about a minute and a half.  I even managed to impress the IT recruiter who was sitting next to me.  Years of arts and craft experience had finally paid off!

After that moment, I felt so energized and amazed. Quoting the great Walt Disney, Giovanni explained , “it’s kinda fun to do the impossible.” And indeed it is. In times like these, it really helps to stretch your imagination and maintain a positive attitude – no matter what goal you’re striving towards.

Giovanni told us about how he became the magician for the Orlando Magic basketball team, and explained that initially, his magic didn’t really wow audiences. But he persevered, and invented audience-interactive games and t-shirt shooting cannons that were patented and used in all types of professional sports venues, including National Hockey League arenas. He even demonstrated by having the audience shoot 3-pointers through basketball hoops that were attached to his back.

We walked away breathless and wanting more.  Giovanni was very sweet and stayed behind to interact with the crowd, and was kind enough to take a photo with Frank and myself.  We thanked him for his presentation, and he gave us VIP tickets to his website.  You can find him at
