AR Job 817 System Administrator / Virtualization Engineer
Our Client operates multiple data centres located throughout Canada to ensure the availability of our web application. .
They 40+ virtual servers with Chef to ensure predictable, repeatable and reliable deploys.
They are looking for someone to get our bare-metal virtualization layer properly setup, refine and test our Disaster Recovery plan and then comb through the infrastructure with an air towards improved availability, performance and security.
Responsibilities:
- Be awesome on team awesome.
- Take personal responsibility for the availability, reliability and security of our service.
- Install and maintain their bare metal infrastructure, switching and firewall technology.
- Ensure a very well setup KVM virtualization layer across our two data-centers.
- Disaster Recovery, Backups and sub-second failover between data-centers.
- LDAP security(OpenLDAP), Auditing (Splunk) and Monitoring (Nagios)
- MySQL database maintenance and performance tuning.
- Contribute to open source technology including our infrastructure management tools Mothership, Chef and Alfred
- Be absolutely, unequivocally married to change control and planning tool Redmine destroying anything that makes changes without a ticket like the terminator terminates terminators.
- You’ve “carried the pager” before (ideally at both a startup and a large infrastructure provider) & have first-hand experience with what happens when infrastructure tools fail.
- You’re always thinking…”what happens if this fails?”
- You know how to program infrastructure not just “do infrastructure”. Michael Jordan was all about Just doing It… We’re about replacing people with elegant scripts so we can play with the office RC helecopter.
- You work well independantly and in a team environment.
- You are PROCESS ORIENTED and are not a Fire Fighter. If you’re the “always-busy doing” IT guy this is not the position..we’re looking for the “Always-researching because everything is working, secure and backed up” it guy
- You’ve made a substantial contribution to a widely used open source project. Huge bonus points if you started or lead a project. ^2 if we can see this on your github page
- You know Chef, Ruby, MySQL, Rails 3, Bundler, Nagios, Splunk, OpenLDAP
- You’ve worked with Cisco, IBM Blade Center HS21s, IBM Fiber Channel Storage Area Networks, Ubuntu, RedHat
- You read up on and experiment with new technologies because it’s in your nature, not because it’s a job requirement.
- You don’t just learn how things work, you learn why.
- Formal training in computer science (bachelors, masters, whatever)
- Financial Systems or PCI Compliance Experience.
